"The necessity of continually reappraising strategy in shifting international and domestic environments makes it essential that policymakers and the attentive public alike have a clear understanding of the fundamental policy and process challenges that confront the nation. The authors of this sixth edition have provided a timely and valuable contribution toward gaining that understanding."

"A classic text, widely used in universities... It does an exemplary job of explaining the process of defining and implementing national security objectives. Hardly any significant subject is omitted from this very rich and readable volume."
